Freiburg is Germany’s most sustainable city

In his Blog this Big City Joe Peach published a post by Justin Woolford at Forum for the Future. Woolford reports from what is arguably Germany’s most sustainable city. It offers heliotropic houses, a solar district, modern ‘passive housing’ blocks that eliminate the need for externally powered heating and cooling. This is one of 17 sustainable ideas for the global climate summit.

Freiburg is not only the birthplace of the German Green Party it is also a unique place in the matter of sustainable and green live style. Here each block is “unique in its design and part of a vibrant plethora of private developments by individual co-operatives”. “It’s a safe, colourful, friendly community. I want to move here”, states Woolford. Is there a bigger compliment for a city?

17 Sustainable Ideas for COP17 is a collaboration between This Big City and Future Cape Town running alongside the United Nations Climate Change Conferenc from November 28th to December 9th.
