TITLE:
Understanding Active Ageing Through Intergenerational Social Participation
CONTENT:
Ensuring that older adults can participate in meaningful forms of social participation is a fundamental aspect of ‘active ageing'. This requires a social and physical environment which is age friendly in relation to diverse older people and also inclusive of different age groups. This talk will explore how older people construct social participation within their every community environments using data from the ESRC funded Placeage project. Analysis of 104 interviews with older people in three cities in the UK will be presented to reveal older people’s perspectives on ‘constructing meaningful social participation across ages’, ‘negotiating social participation’ and ‘navigating home and community to enable social participation’. The analysis exposes the agentic processes involved, the barriers and facilitators of contextualised social participation and the notion of older people’s rights to inclusion in the life of the city. The talk concludes by discussing implications of the findings for the delivery of age-friendly communities.
